39.Ito Jakuchu

Today, I write about “Ito Jakuchu”.
Ito Jakuchu was a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period.Ito Jakuchu
After having watched his picture, I may believe it if said in this way.
“The cock of this picture moves at night”.

1716, He was born as the eldest son of a Kyoto grocer.
Then, he inherits the store.
He was a well-to-do merchant.
However, he was not interested except painting pictures.
He was not interested in marriage either.

He entered Kano school of Japanese painting to study a picture after being over 30 years old.
However, he leaves there immediately.
He visited the temple, and copied famous picture owned by temple.
He resembled a trainee monk.
1755, He transfers the management of the shop to a younger brother.
The ascetic practices of the copying are said to be approximately 1,000 pieces.
He thought in this way.
“This picture cannot be exceeded only by copying.”
He wanted to paint “mind of God” of the creature.
He kept dozens of cocks and observed it for approximately one year.
He continued painting cock for two years.
1757, He begins the most famous works “動植綵絵, Doshoku sai-e”.
It took ten years until completion.
It was praised.

1788, Misfortune came upon him.
He lost a house by the Great Fire of the Tenmei era.
He was poor and painted a picture for money.
It was the first among his life.
Because he was unselfish, the poverty was not troubled.
He changed 15 kg of rice for one picture.
His last work is life of Buddha.
The mason produced the statue.

1800, he dies at 84 years old.
He did not marry.
His grave is located in the sekiho temple in Kyoto.
