Today, I write about “Aesthetics of an eccentric.”
Furuta Oribe was a Japanese military commander in the Sengoku period.
1567, He became Oda Nobunaga’s subordinate at the age of 24.
He was good at persuasion and negotiation.
He was not good at battle.
Oda Nobunaga was “A revolutionary of the beauty” for him.
Azuchi Castle that Oda Nobunaga built was beautiful and majestic.
Beauty for Oda Nobunaga was “his own likings.”
Oda Nobunaga liked the rare thing of the Western style.
Furuta Oribe thought that the common sense of art changed.
Furthermore, Furuta Oribe meets Sen no Rikyu.
Sen no Rikyu was master of the tea ceremony and composite artist.oribe12
Sen no Rikyu was leader of person of culture.
His favorite items were called “Rikyu’s likings” and become popular items.
Sen no Rikyu liked the simple and natural thing.
Furuta Oribe’s liking was strange.
He liked cracked thing and deformed thing.
For example, he breaks the completed tea bowl and glued the broken pieces together.

1582, there was an Incident at Honnoji temple, Oda Nobunaga died.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi brought the country under his rule.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi liked gorgeous gold.
He built golden tea room.
1591,Sen no Rikyu incurred Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s anger, and was ordered to perform hara-kiri.
Furuta Oribe lamented Sen no Rikyu’s death.
Furuta Oribe took over Rikyu’s will.
After,”Oribe’s likings” become popular items.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who had dominated Japan died in Osaka castle in 1598 and Tokugawa Ieyasu took power.
1610, Furuta Oribe became the tea ceremony instructor to the second Shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada.
The Toyotomi family still had power.
Tokugawa Ieyasu felt them as distortion.
Tokugawa Ieyasu was perfectionist.
Tokugawa Ieyasu tried to ruin the Toyotomi family.
Furuta Oribe looked for a way of existing peacefully together.
Distortion was a part of beauty for Furuta Oribe.
Furuta Oribe incurred Tokugawa Ieyasu’s anger, and was ordered to perform hara-kiri.
He died dignifiedly like Sen no Rikyu.

1615, Siege of Osaka, The Toyotomi family was wiped out completely by the Tokugawa army.
Tokugawa period lasted for 15 successive reigns, some 260 years, until the time of Yoshinobu Tokugawa.
