74.A story of German pastry chef

Today, I write about “A story of German pastry chef.”
Karl Juchheim was born and raised in Kaub, Germany.
1908, the 22 year old Juchheim moved to Jiaozhou Bay located in the Shandong Province of China.
It was a leased territory of Germany.
He began working at a café in Jiaozhou.
1909 he began his own pastry shop where he sold cakes.Karl Juchheim
His baumkuchen was so delicious.
He made good in business.
1914, he married German woman Elise.
They were very happy.

1914,World War I broke out, British and Japanese forces began the siege of Tsingtao.
Karl was sent to prison camp as prisoners of war.
1918, the end of World War I, he was released.

1919, Exhibition of German technology and handicraft was held in “Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall.”
( “Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall” is the present “A-Bomb Dome.”)
He sold baumkuchen there.
His Baumkuchen sold out.
He regained his confidence as a pastry chef.

1921,He opened his own pastry shop in Yokohama.
His pastry shop prospered greatly.
September 1, 1923, The Great Kanto Earthquake, destroyed their shop completely.
His family and employees were safe.

The couple then moved to Kobe, borrowed a large sum of money and opened a new store in Kobe.
Former employees also worked in a new store.
Their pastry shop prospered again.
His wife Elise also supported the store.
They were very happy.

1939,World War 2 broke out.
1941, Japan declared war on United States.
His son was called up Germany Army.
Employees was called up Japanese Army.
1945, Their pastry shop was completely destroyed.
Karl Juchheim died on August 14, 1945, a day before the surrender of Japan.
His wife Elise was forcibly deported back to Germany.
She learned that her son had died in the battle.

1953, Elise Juchheim returned to Japan.
Former employees established the company of confectionery manufacture.
Elise Juchheim took office as the president.pastry shop
1971, Elise Juchheim died at the age of 80.

The company grew, their baumkuchen was deliciously similar.
Even if a town was burned or even if the people died, spirit and skill lives on.
