70.The Beginning of Shinto shrine

Today, I write about “The Beginning of Shinto shrine.”
Oct 2,2013, The ceremony called “Shikinen Sengu” is held in Ise Grand Shrine.
Ise Grand Shrine is the place where Shinto started.
The main buildings of both the shogu (main shrine) and betsugu (auxiliary associated shrines) of Ise Grand Shrine are in general subject to regular rebuilding efforts every 20 years, such renewals are called “shikinen sengu.”

The 6th century, Tang (China) was an advanced nation at the time.
Japan imported Buddhism, law, culture, and others from Tang.
Tang was spreading the sphere of influence.
Ooama no miko had a sense of crisis.
“Tang may attack.”
However, Imperial Court did not change the plan of the country.

A.D.672, Jinshin War.
Ooamano Miko raised an army.
Group was only 30 persons.
Volunteers were called for, but none came forward.
They arrived at Ise.
Suddenly, Amaterasu omikami (the Sun Goddess) appeared when Ooamano Miko bathed in the river.
He thought that self was Sun Goddess’s posterity.
He prayed for the victory.
After that, their powerful attack advance started and won.
A.D.673, Ooamano Miko became Emperor Temmu.
He tried to build the country independent of Tang.
He instructed compilation of the Japanese history book (Nihon shoki).
He recommended handing down song and dance.
And Japanese was generated.Shikinen Sengu3
Furthermore,he made object of veneration.
“The shrine that sacred Amaterasu omikami (the Sun Goddess) ”
It is the Ise Grand Shrine.
These days, the first name of a country to be called “Nippon” was used.

A.D.686, Emperor Temmu death.
Emperor Temmu’s wife worried that a civil war might happen.
She became Emperor Jito.
Emperor Jito instructed that shrine is rebuilt and hold a festival.Shikinen Sengu2
It’s “The First Shikinen Sengu.”

About 1300 years after, It’s the 62th “Shikinen Sengu.”
It is completely the same as “The First Shikinen Sengu” and will never change forever.
