Today, I write about “One-way ticket to Japan “.
1838, Thomas Blake Glover was born in north east Scotland.Glover-
He had a great anxiety to succeed.
1857 at the age of 18, he crossed over to Shanghai.
Two years later, he crossed over to Nagasaki in Japan.
He founded his own firm, Glover and Co.
He built the house of western style on top of the hill.
That was a wonderful place that overlooks the Nagasaki harbor.
Japan was confused at that time.
Nationalistic militants in Satsuma and Choshu spearheaded anti-government efforts aimed at toppling the Shogunate and restoring the Emperor as sovereign.
Glover supported them.
He sold the newest arms to them.
And he supported the studying abroad of excellent person.
1867, Anti-government efforts overthrew the Shogunate.
Glover said like this later.
“Probably, I am the greatest traitor for Tokugawa shogunate.”

1870, Thomas Glover went bankrupt,
but he stayed in Japan to manage the Takashima coal mine after the Restoration for the mine’s Dutch owners until it was taken over by the Meiji government.

1870, A son was born to Glover.
A son’s name is Tomisaburo Awajiya Glover.
After that , A son was naturalized to Japan, and changed name to Kuraba Tomisaburo.
Half-blooded children were rare in Japan.
However, many half-blooded children were in Nagasaki.
For Tomisaburo, Nagasaki was good environment.
He grew favorably.

Glover was a key figure in the industrialisation of Japan.
1884, Glover becomes an adviser of Mitsubishi Group.
The Glover family moves from Nagasaki to Tokyo.
He let his house in Nagasaki.

Tomisaburo entered prestigious school in Tokyo.
However, He found it very difficult to adjust himself to life in the new school.
He left school half-way and returned to Nagasaki.
He joined the trading company in Nagasaki.
After that, Tomisaburo married half-blooded Nakano Waka.
He lived a happy life in Nagasaki.
1909, He moved to the house where he was born.
He become a bridge between the foreigner who lives in Nagasaki and Japanese.

1911, Thomas Glover died at his home in Tokyo, but was buried at the Sakamoto International Cemetery in Nagasaki.

1937, The Second Sino-Japanese War breaks out.
Many foreigners of Nagasaki went back.

1938, Big warship construction started in Nagasaki.
It was military secrets.
It was able to see from Tomisaburo’s house.
He was suspected of being Spy.
Tomisaburo sold off the house and moves from Nagasaki to Tokyo.

1941, World War II breaks out.Glover Garden
1941, Tomisaburo’s wife and Waka died.
August 9, 1945, the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.
Nagasaki razed to the ground.
Tomisaburo loses hope.
August 26, He died by his own hand.

Tomisaburo’s house in Nagasaki was not destroyed.
1958, His house became possession of Nagasaki city.
After that, it becomes “Glover Garden”, and became a famous sightseeing spot.
