49.beautiful life

Ogata KoanToday, I write about “beautiful life”.
There’s nothing as beautiful as dedicating one’s life for a cause.
There is the person who lived a very beautiful life.
His name is Ogata Koan .
He is a doctor of the late Edo period.
He don’t want to prestige and benefit.
He was competent.
However, he continued living for other persons.
1810, he was born as lower-class samurai’s son.
His boyhood, he gave up becoming a samurai due to debilitation, and he made up his mind to be a doctor.

1838, Koan opened a clinic in Osaka.
At the same time, he established a private school for Western studies, “Tekijuku”.

Edo period, there used to be status system.
However, this school was without discrimination.
There were a doctor’s child, a samurai’s child, and a farmer’s child.
The teacher was only Koan.
Koan was a doctor and also a teacher.
He was busy.
The education of a private school went well.
Koan said to students like this.
“Live for other persons.”
“Don’t want to prestige and benefit.”
“All you have to do is help people.”

His reputation got abroad.
The shogunate said, “Become a shogun’s doctor.”
Koan obeyed it reluctantly.
1862, Koan emigrated to Edo and became the doctor of the Shogun.
Next year, he died.

1867, the samurai’s time was over.
Students of Koan succeeded his idea.

2011,The American English teacher was in Rikuzen-Takata in Japan.
He read the book about Ogata Koan and was impressed.
He wrote like this.
“There’s nothing as beautiful as dedicating one’s life for a cause.”
After several hours, Monty Dickson was swept away in the tsunami.
I pray that his soul may rest in peace.
