29. Sen no Rikyu

Today, I write about “Sen no Rikyu”.
The 16th century,　Japan were Age of the Country at War.
“Sen no Rikyu” was born as a child of the famous merchant of Osaka Sakai.
He receives the education of the Japanese tea ceremony.
Osaka Sakai was a small independent country then.
1568, Oda Nobunaga governs Osaka Sakai.
The mental world of the Japanese tea ceremony was very important for the general.

“Wabi-sabi” is in the mental of the Japanese tea ceremony.
Oda Nobunaga gave tea utensils to vassal as reward.
The famous tea utensils had the same value as a castle.

1585, Nobunaga’s tea party was held in Honno-ji.
However, Nobunaga was killed by Akechi Mitsuhide.
And many expensive tea utensils were also lost.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi became Nobunaga’s successor.
“Sen no Rikyu” was a tea master for Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
There are the following stories.
On the morning of early summer,Sen no Rikyu said to Hideyoshi.
“A morning glory（flower) is beautiful, please come for a tea party”
Hideyoshi imagined many beautiful morning glories.
However, there was not the morning glory.
When Hideyoshi entered the tea room, one morning glory was arranged in a vase.
It was a very beautiful scene.

Hideyoshi liked the gorgeous item.
Hideyoshi made the golden tearoom.
It was different from the mind of the tea ceremony.
However, Rikyu Senno uses a black teacup for Hideyoshi.
They were opposed to one another.

Hideyoshi went to the temple of Kyoto.
There was a wooden statue of Sen no Rikyu on the gate.
Hideyoshi thought that he was looked down on by Sen no Rikyu.
Hideyoshi makes Sen no Rikyu “house penitence.”
Sen no Rikyu was put under house arrest.
It seemed that it will solve if Sen no Rikyu apologizes.
Sen no Rikyu did not apologize.
Hideyoshi orders hara-kiri.

Sen no Rikyu died.
Then, Hideyoshi repented.
He accepted Sen no Rikyu’s manners.

1615, The Siege of Osaka, Toyotomi family was overthrown.

Now, Sen no Rikyu’s tea ceremony is handed down by many persons as Japanese mind.
