14. Katsushika Hokusai

hokusaiToday, I write about “Katsushika Hokusai.”
Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period.
He did nothing other than drawing a picture.
He got a large amount of reward, but he was not interested in money.
His wallet is always put on a desk.
When payment is demanded, he says the following.
“Take it from the wallet.”
He was not interested in the contents of the wallet.
Therefore he was always poor.
He does not clean the room.
If a house becomes full of garbage, he move out.
He did the move 93 times.
Last house is where he lived before.
It was in the same state as the time of his moving out there.
Then, he did not move.
He changed the name 30 times.
“Hokusai Katsushika” is those one.
He always drew pictures.
His pupil says.
From September to April, He does not get out of kotatsu.
He draws a picture through in his waking hours,
He sleep if he become sleepy, he draw a picture as soon as he get up.
1849, Hokusai dies at 90 years old.
He said just before death.
“If only Heaven will give me just another ten years… Just another five more years, then I could become a real painter.”
Afterwards, he receives high evaluation from people of the world for 160 years.
And his evaluation will not change in the future either.
