10. Kanaguri Shiso

KanaguriToday, I write about the great record.
It is the story 100 years ago.
The Stockholm Olympics were held in 1912.
One Japanese participates in “marathon”.
His name “is Kanaguri Shiso”.
He bettered the world record in 1911.
He was one of the most promising runner.
However, he falls down by sunstroke in the middle of a race.
He is helped by a kind person and he wakes up on the next day.
His record is “missing”.

Afterwards, He participates in the Olympics twice.
He marries and becomes father.
He teach many students as a school teacher.
He makes an effort for the spread of marathon.

In 1967, he is invited by the Olympic Committee of Sweden.
Olympic Committee of Sweden thought “he is running.”
He does not “drop out “.
He reached the finish line 54 years later after start.
After he reached the finish line, it is declared.
“All competition schedule of the fifth Stockholm Olympics was finished”
His record is “54 years, 8 months, 6 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes, 20 seconds”.

In 1983, he died at 92 years old.
His thought is handed down to a young person.
1992, Barcelona Olympics marathon silver medal Koichi Morishita.
2000, Sydney Olympics marathon gold medal Naoko Takahashi.
2004, Athens Olympics marathon gold medal Mizuki Noguchi.
“Kanaguri Shiso” is called “father of the marathon” in Japan.
